Upon investigating their AWS RDS setup, we discovered that the company was utilizing nine databases across production and non-production environments. We analyzed usage patterns and current costs, identifying opportunities to switch the storage type from IO1 to the newer GP3, which offered IOPS at no additional cost. Additionally, we recognized that high-cost instances were being used unnecessarily, so we recommended scaling the instances up during peak hours and down during off-peak periods. These optimizations resulted in a savings of approximately $560,000 over the course of one year.
Elasticsearch (ES) Cost Optimization
Next, we turned our attention to optimizing the AWS ES services. Our investigation revealed that the expensive instances used for both data and master nodes were not necessary. We recommended switching to more cost-effective instance types. Furthermore, after a deeper performance analysis, we advised reducing the number of data nodes by a third from the current configuration. These changes led to additional savings of $470,000 across all environments.
